The American Society of Reproductive
Medicine is "Infertility's" self-governed body. The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology is where
fertility centers must report their statistics. Both societies state that any advertisements of comparative pregnancy
rates include the following:
"As entry criteria are highly variable for each program,
a center-by-center comparison of results is not valid."
The current national average (which is
probably the most useful information due to patient selection and other issues - see About Pregnancy Rates) is
a summary of 1995 data. In 1995, 22.3% of egg retrievals resulted in a live birth. This is slightly ahead of the
20% live birth rate in reproductively normal couples. It should be noted that scientific improvements, such as
ICSI, started to gain popularity in 1996.
