Immunological
factors generally mean that a woman may be making antibodies that are working
against the sperm. Or, it is possible for a man to make antibodies that are
working against his own sperm. Immunological factors play a role in
infertility, but it is unclear how often.
Perhaps
the best test for sperm antibodies is done using microscopic beads coated with
antibodies to human antibodies. The test can be done on sperm and on wife's
serum. If there are significant antibodies in the woman toward sperm, IVF is
most likely to produce a pregnancy. If there are major male antibodies to his
own sperm, it may be necessary to perform ICSI. |
