Customized Hormone Management
As a Reproductive Endocrinologist, our practice largely involves caring for couples who have difficulties starting or growing families. However, Reproductive Endocrinology also includes helping women with other hormone problems. Today, women are living longer and have a wide range of activities that keep them busy. Frequently, hormonal changes make it progressively more difficult for them to live the full lives they prefer. Advances in our understanding of these hormonal changes have made it possible to greatly improve the quality of life, and sense of well being that mature women deserve.

After the age of 40, ovarian function changes and becomes progressively less reliable. Women produce less estrogen, as well as other hormones, which help maintain the health, not only of pelvic organs, but also blood vessels and bones. In addition to decreasing ovarian function, data collected over the past several years indicate that the adrenal glands also decline in their ability to produce hormones. As ovaries and adrenal glands begin to function less efficiently, women begin to experience sleep disturbances, and an overall decrease in energy.

Over several decades, we have known of the importance of women's hormones to decrease the risk of heart attack, stroke and osteoporosis. All of these medical issues decrease the quality of life for women and are potentially deadly. Our treatments can not only decrease these risks, but also improve quality of sleep. The combination of hormone deficiencies and sleep disturbances frequently cause or contribute to depression. Now we have the ability to manage these problems and improve both quality and length of life for women, today.

Over the past decades, hormone replacement for women has primarily been accomplished with pills. In order for these hormones to be effective, they either had to be administered in very large doses, or modified so that the enzymes in the intestines and liver would not destroy them. Since all the things absorbed from the intestine go to the liver first, the liver gets blasted by hormones women swallow. In the case of estrogens, the pills cause the liver to increase production of clotting factors. This increases the risk of blood clots. By using other routes of administration, we can provide smaller doses of bio-identical hormone. In an effort to provide maximum flexibility and choice of options for our patients, we offer hormone replacement administration by several routes.

In addition to diagnostic testing for hormone deficiencies, we can treat these deficiencies in a customized manner. We will individualize your treatment. We also take a holistic approach to our medical management in that we have available a licensed counselor to assist with stress management and other issues impacting psychological well being.
